Patna: A new programme launched at the Indira Gandhi Institute of Cardiology (IGIC) in Patna will provide free treatment for children born with holes in the heart, using advanced device-closure technology. Thirty children selected from districts across Bihar will undergo the procedure under the Chief Minister’s Child Heart Scheme and the Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram (RBSK).

The children, shortlisted at the civil surgeon level, will be treated by a specialist team at IGIC with support from visiting experts from New Delhi. The operations will be carried out under the supervision of Dr Neeraj Awasthi, director of paediatric cardiology at Fortis Escorts Heart Institute.

Dr Sunil Kumar, director of IGIC, said the minimally invasive procedure would be performed in the institute’s cath lab to close cardiac septal defects without the need for major surgery. A team of senior cardiologists from Delhi, including Dr N K Agarwal and Dr Ambikanandan Bharatvasi, will be present on Wednesday and Thursday to assist in the procedures.

According to Dr Birendra Kumar Singh, nodal officer and joint director of the programme, congenital heart defects can lead to recurrent pneumonia, feeding difficulties, breathlessness and delayed growth in infants. While device-closure surgery typically costs between Rs 1.5 lakh and Rs 2.5 lakh in private hospitals, IGIC will provide the treatment free of charge.

Dr Singh explained that holes in the heart occur when the septum – the wall dividing the heart chambers – does not develop completely during pregnancy. Genetic factors, a family history of heart disease, and maternal infections such as rubella can increase the risk. Lifestyle factors during pregnancy, including alcohol, smoking, certain medications, and uncontrolled diabetes or high blood pressure, may also affect foetal heart development. Premature babies are more likely to be born with such defects.

Common symptoms of a heart hole in children include:

  • Recurrent pneumonia or cough
  • Fatigue or shortness of breath during feeding
  • Poor weight gain
  • Rapid breathing
  • Fast heartbeat
  • Excessive sweating
  • Bluish lips while crying (in some cases)

  • Tensions have escalated in Bihar after five revenue officials in Bhojpur district were suspended for participating in an ongoing strike that disrupted public services. The action, ordered by the district administration, aims to restore normal functioning and enforce discipline within the department.

Authorities stated that the officials continued their protest despite clear instructions to resume work, calling it a violation of service rules and a direct obstruction to governance. The suspended staff were posted across multiple regions, highlighting the wider impact of the strike on administrative operations.

The move is part of a broader crackdown by the state government, which has adopted a zero-tolerance stance against disruptions caused by employee protests. With the situation unfolding, all eyes are now on whether the suspensions will resolve the issue or intensify the standoff.

  • A late-night raid at Beur Central Jail in Patna has sparked fresh concerns over prison security after officials recovered a mobile phone and data cable from inside the high-security premises. The operation, conducted between 10:50 PM and 12:45 AM, was part of an intensified crackdown across Bihar’s jails.

The search was led by senior officials along with a large police team, covering multiple sections of the jail, including the Ganga Block where the items were found. Following the recovery, a warder has been suspended, while other staff members are under investigation for possible lapses.

Authorities say such inspections are routine, but the incident has raised serious questions about internal oversight and security systems in one of the state’s key correctional facilities, especially amid ongoing statewide prison checks.

  • A controversial notice from a nursing college in Bihar has sparked outrage after students were warned that getting married during their course could lead to immediate cancellation of admission. The directive, displayed at a GNM school in Gopalganj, quickly went viral on social media and raised serious questions about students’ rights and personal freedom.

The principal defended the rule, stating that students sign a declaration at the time of admission agreeing not to marry during the three-year course. However, the district administration stepped in, revoked the order, and demanded an explanation within 12 hours, warning of strict action if the response is unsatisfactory.

Authorities have now launched an inquiry to investigate how such a directive was issued, as debates continue around outdated restrictions and the need for student-friendly policies in educational institutions.

  • Nitish Kumar met Samrat Choudhary at the CM residence in Patna, marking their first in-person interaction after the leadership change. The brief 20-minute meeting focused on Bihar’s political climate and administrative matters, with senior leaders also present, signaling coordinated discussions within the government.

Photos from the meeting showed a cordial atmosphere, including a moment where Kumar placed his hand on Choudhary’s shoulder—described as a gesture of guidance. The interaction has drawn attention amid ongoing political developments in the state.

The liquor prohibition policy remained a key topic, with Choudhary reaffirming its strict enforcement and linking it to Kumar’s legacy, while also citing support from Narendra Modi. However, voices like Anant Singh continue to question its effectiveness, keeping the debate alive even as the government signals no immediate change.

  • The Bihar government is set to roll out an Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS), bringing AI-powered surveillance and automation to roads across the state. From highways to city intersections, smart cameras will detect violations like overspeeding, red-light jumping, and not wearing helmets or seatbelts—making enforcement faster and more efficient.

Beyond traffic control, the system will use facial recognition to identify repeat offenders and assist police in tracking suspects. With 500–700 locations planned and a central control hub supported by district-level monitoring centres, authorities aim to strengthen both road safety and law enforcement.

With an estimated cost of ₹300 crore, the project will also feature real-time incident alerts and adaptive traffic signals to reduce congestion. While it promises smarter roads and quicker response times, it also raises important questions about privacy and data security.

  • WhatsApp is working on a powerful new feature called “After Reading” that could completely change how we message. With this update, users will be able to make messages disappear automatically after they’ve been seen, giving more control over privacy and conversations.

Unlike current disappearing messages, this feature focuses on when the message is actually read. Users may get options like 5 minutes, 1 hour, or even 12 hours after viewing—making it easier to manage sensitive chats and keep things temporary.

Though still in development, this update signals a big step toward smarter and safer messaging. If rolled out successfully, it could redefine how we share information online.
