Sitamarhi: A 31-year-old Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) jawan posted on the Indo-Nepal border in Sitamarhi died by suicide on Saturday after allegedly shooting himself with his service INSAS rifle. The incident took place at the Ramnagara camp under Kanhauli police station, creating shock and panic among personnel stationed there.
The deceased has been identified as Nayan Baral, son of Nityanand Baral, a resident of Gohal Bati in the Howrah police station area of West Bengal.
According to officials, soldiers rushed towards Baral’s barrack after hearing a sudden gunshot. They found him collapsed and bleeding heavily. He was provided first aid and immediately moved for medical assistance but died on the way, SSB sources said.
Crowd gathers outside camp as security tightened
The sound of gunfire sparked tension beyond the camp as well. Local residents gathered near the gate, while SSB personnel quickly barricaded the premises and halted all entry, including that of the media.
Baral’s body was later transported to Sadar Hospital for a postmortem.
Police notified; preliminary probe indicates suicide
Police from Kanhauli station reached the camp soon after being informed by SSB officers. A senior officer said a preliminary investigation suggests suicide, though the motive is yet to be determined.
An SSB official confirmed that an internal inquiry has begun. Baral’s colleagues are being questioned about his behaviour over recent days and whether he had expressed signs of stress.
Fellow soldiers described him as “quiet, disciplined and regular in his duties” and said he had “never spoken of any personal difficulty or mental strain.”
Investigation underway; officials await postmortem report
SSB authorities said the cause of death can only be confirmed after the postmortem report and a detailed internal review. Access to the Ramnagara camp remains restricted while investigators continue their inquiry.
