Patna: Indian Railways has introduced a new cash-access facility for passengers, converting mini-pantries on select trains into onboard ATM cabins. The initiative—launched on an experimental basis—will allow travellers to withdraw money even while the train is in motion.
The first trial has begun on the Manmad–CSMT Panchavati Express, branded as ATM-on-Wheels, in a move the Railway Ministry says could enhance passenger convenience and generate additional non-fare revenue.
The facility is now expected to be extended to long-distance routes running through the region, including the Vikramshila Express, LTT Express, Ang Express and Amarnath Express.
Mini-pantries converted into secure ATM cabins
Railway officials confirmed that the ATMs have been installed by repurposing mini-pantry spaces on trains. The machines have been fitted with rubber pads, bolts and two fire extinguishers to safeguard equipment from vibration and ensure adherence to safety standards.
The Public Relations Officer of Malda Division said the expansion to other trains would depend on the response and performance of the trial run on the Panchavati Express.
ATMs to be placed in the last coach
The ATMs will be housed in the last pantry cabin of the designated coach, replacing temporary pantry facilities. Additional shutters and secured doors will be installed to maintain safety and restrict unauthorised access while the train is moving.
