Patna: Tej Pratap Yadav, the JJD chief and elder son of RJD leader Lalu Prasad Yadav, has paid an electricity bill of Rs 3.61 lakh that had been pending for nearly three years. The bill was for his private home in the Beur area of Patna. According to officials, he cleared the dues soon after receiving a notice from the electricity department.
Records show that Tej Pratap had last paid his electricity bill in July 2022. After that, the amount kept increasing every month because the bills were not cleared and interest continued to add up. His electricity connection, which has been active since 2018, usually shows a monthly usage of about 500 units. Despite the growing dues, the power supply to his residence was not disconnected.
This has led to serious questions about the functioning of the electricity department. As per the rules, any consumer who owes more than Rs 25,000 can have their connection cut. Every year, the department disconnects the connections of millions of ordinary consumers for unpaid dues. Yet, in this case, no such action was taken even though the pending amount crossed Rs 3 lakh.
People are now asking why the rules were not followed and whether special treatment was given. The situation has triggered a debate about fairness and accountability in government departments, especially when it comes to influential individuals.
