Patna: Rohini Acharya, the younger daughter of Lalu Prasad and Rabri Devi, has intensified an already simmering family dispute with a pointed social media post calling for deeper reforms to protect women’s rights in Bihar. The comments, shared on X on Thursday, come weeks after she publicly distanced herself from both the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and her family.
Acharya criticised what she described as the Bihar government’s limited approach to women’s empowerment, arguing that initiatives such as cash support or distributing bicycles fall short of addressing systemic inequality. “Giving girls 10,000 rupees or distributing bicycles, even if done with good intentions, is insufficient in addressing the systemic issues that hinder women’s empowerment in India,” she wrote.

She urged both the state and society to take “concrete steps” to safeguard women’s equal rights, particularly in the face of indifference within families. The “deeply entrenched patriarchal mindset in Bihar”, she added, required comprehensive social and political reforms.
Acharya went on to say that every girl should feel assured that her parental home is a safe place—one without fear, guilt, shame or the need to justify her presence. Ensuring this, she argued, was not merely an administrative task but a vital step towards preventing exploitation and harassment.
Her remarks arrive against the backdrop of a widening rift in the Lalu family following the RJD’s electoral defeat. In recent weeks, Acharya has accused her family members of mistreatment, alleging that she was subjected to hostility at her parental home and even faced an attempt to be struck with slippers. She specifically held her brother, former deputy chief minister Tejashwi Prasad Yadav, responsible for the situation and also levelled allegations against Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Yadav, a close aide of Tejashwi.
