Patna: The Department of Pulmonary Medicine at AIIMS Patna recently hosted two specialised workshops on Pulmonary Function Tests (PFT) and Medical Thoracoscopy as part of NAPCON Patna 2025, aiming to equip young physicians with updated knowledge and practical skills in advanced respiratory diagnostics.
The inauguration ceremony was led by the Director of AIIMS Patna, who emphasised the rising challenges posed by respiratory diseases and the critical need for advanced diagnostic techniques. He praised the department’s initiative and reaffirmed the institute’s commitment to promoting high-level training programmes for medical professionals.
Dr. Dipendra Kumar Rai, Head of the Department and Local Convener, welcomed participants and provided an in-depth overview of PFT and Diffusing Capacity for Carbon Monoxide (DLCO) tests.
Pulmonary Function Test Workshop
The PFT workshop featured sessions by leading experts:
- Spirometry – Dr S. K. Chhibbera discussed spirometry techniques, interpretation, common errors, and graph-based analysis.
- Body Box and CPET – Dr S. C. Talwar from Metro Hospital Delhi covered body plethysmography, cardio-pulmonary exercise testing, and their modern clinical applications.
- Impulse Oscillometry (IOS) and FeNO – Dr Atri highlighted the use of IOS and fractional exhaled nitric oxide tests in diagnosing airway diseases.
Medical Thoracoscopy Workshop
Coordinated by Dr Somesh Thakur and led by Dr Munawwar, the thoracoscopy workshop focused on indications, procedural methodology, pleural biopsy, management of complications, and featured live demonstrations. Participants gained hands-on experience in modern thoracoscopic techniques.
Over 150 physicians from across India attended the workshops, describing them as highly informative, practical, and relevant to their clinical practice.
