Patna: Vaibhav Suryavanshi, a young cricketer from Bihar, has created history by smashing 14 sixes in a single youth ODI innings. The 14-year-old achieved this extraordinary feat in the U-19 Asia Cup match against the UAE, breaking the previous record of 12 sixes held by Australia’s Michael Hill since 2008. Vaibhav’s powerful innings of 171 runs off just 95 balls instantly drew national and international attention.
He reached his century in only 56 balls and led India to their highest-ever total in a youth ODI. The team scored a massive 433 runs, surpassing the earlier record of 425. His innings included 14 sixes and nine fours, and he received strong support from teammates Aaron George and Vihaan Malhotra, who both scored 69 runs. This performance has strengthened India’s standing in youth cricket and highlighted Vaibhav as a rising star.
This match was not his first major achievement. Vaibhav recently became the youngest batsman to score a century in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, hitting an unbeaten 108 off 61 balls. He is also the youngest player to score a fifty in the IPL, reaching the mark at just 14 years and 32 days. Most remarkably, he holds the record for being the youngest player to score a T20 century, which he achieved in only 35 balls for Rajasthan Royals.
Vaibhav’s journey began in Tajpur, Samastipur, where he started playing cricket at the age of seven. His father, Sanjeev, played a crucial role in shaping his career. To support his son’s dreams, he even sold his land to fund Vaibhav’s training. After joining local academies in Samastipur and later Patna, Vaibhav trained intensely for years, often practising for five to six hours daily in extreme heat. His coach recalls how Vaibhav’s determination and hard work set him apart from other young players.
Despite some controversy around his age, his father had a medical test conducted, which verified his correct age. Vaibhav, who idolises West Indies legend Brian Lara, says he wants to play for India’s senior cricket team one day. His coaches describe him as a calm, focused boy who lives only for cricket. With records already tumbling at such a young age, Vaibhav’s dream now looks more achievable than ever.
