Patna: Patna’s Jayaprakash Narayan International Airport, one of the busiest regional airports in India, is planning a major technological upgrade with the installation of a state-of-the-art surveillance radar. The radar will help Air Traffic Control (ATC) monitor all flights in real time, making navigation safer and more efficient. Officials have identified around one acre of land near ICAR for the project and submitted a proposal to the Nitish government four months ago, but the project is currently stalled due to land allocation issues.
The radar is considered extremely important because Patna Airport still relies mainly on traditional visual navigation systems. While smaller airports in Gaya, Darbhanga, and Purnea do not have radar facilities, this upgrade at Patna will provide crucial support to all airports in the state. Once installed, the system will allow ATC to track aircraft accurately, manage flight separation, and provide guidance even in poor weather conditions, reducing the chances of errors.
Patna often experiences flight disruptions due to fog and low visibility, especially in winter months. The new radar will make it easier for planes to take off and land safely, helping reduce delays and cancellations. Passengers will benefit from smoother operations and fewer disruptions, while airlines will gain better control over aircraft movements. The improved monitoring will also increase the airport’s capacity to handle more flights efficiently.
With passenger traffic rising and the possibility of international flights in the future, the radar installation is seen as a critical step in modernising Patna Airport. Airport authorities are hopeful that the land required for the project will be made available soon. Once operational, the radar will not only enhance safety but also strengthen the airport’s ability to manage growing air traffic, paving the way for better services and a more secure flying experience.
