Patna: The Patna administration has decided to strictly enforce rules that allow buses to stop only at designated bus stands and marked stops across the city. The step has been taken to improve the traffic system in urban areas and to make roads safer for commuters. Divisional commissioner Animesh Parashar has clearly instructed that both private and government buses must follow the same rules, especially in busy areas such as Gandhi Maidan, where traffic congestion is a daily problem.
Officials said that one of the main reasons for frequent traffic jams and road accidents in Patna is the practice of buses picking up and dropping passengers at the roadside, crossings and other unauthorised places. This blocks the flow of traffic and puts pedestrians and other drivers at risk. The administration believes that strict control over bus stopping points will help bring order to the roads and reduce confusion for commuters.
The issue had earlier drawn public attention after reports highlighted that expensive bus stops built across the city were being ignored by bus operators. Following this, the Bihar State Road Transport Corporation had also directed its buses to stop only at approved locations. Taking the matter seriously, the divisional commissioner reviewed the situation and issued firm instructions to ensure that these rules are followed without exception.
The district transport officer has been asked to identify vehicles that violate the rules. Apart from imposing fines, the administration has warned that permits of repeat offenders may be cancelled. Legal action can also be taken against drivers and owners. The commissioner stressed that better coordination between the traffic police, transport department and district administration is essential. Regular checking drives will be carried out, and officials said the aim is to give relief to the public from traffic jams and accidents, with no tolerance for negligence.
