Patna: Patna is set to receive a major financial boost after the central government approved a grant of Rs 243 crore to improve cleanliness and basic civic services in the city. The money has been sanctioned on the recommendation of the Fifteenth Finance Commission and is aimed at strengthening solid waste management, sanitation and the drinking water system in Bihar’s capital. Officials say the grant will help Patna move closer to the goal of becoming a clean and well-managed city.
According to an order issued by the department of expenditure under the Union ministry of finance on December 18, 2025, the entire amount allocated to Bihar under this head has been set aside for the Patna urban cluster. A total of Rs 24,300 lakh, or Rs 243 crore, will be transferred directly to urban local bodies without any deductions. This is expected to ease the long-standing shortage of funds faced by the Patna Municipal Corporation and allow faster implementation of key civic projects.
Most of the money will be spent on improving solid waste management in the city. Plans include strengthening door-to-door garbage collection, scientific disposal of waste, processing and recycling systems, and activities linked to the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. Municipal officials believe this funding will help tackle problems such as garbage heaps, irregular collection and unhygienic dumping, which have remained major challenges in many parts of Patna.
The central government has also fixed a strict deadline for the release of funds. The amount must be transferred to the municipal bodies by December 28. If there is any delay, the state government will have to release the money with interest. To ensure transparency, a separate bank account will be opened for this grant and linked to the Public Financial Management System (PFMS), allowing close monitoring of how the funds are used.
Civic officials are hopeful that the Rs 243 crore assistance will bring visible improvements in Patna’s cleanliness and infrastructure. Better sanitation, improved waste management and a stronger drinking water system are expected to improve public health and the overall quality of life for residents. If used effectively, the grant could mark an important step towards making Patna a cleaner and more organised city.
