Patna: As winter settles across the state, doctors are warning that the cold season can increase the risk of high blood pressure, heart attacks, and strokes. Lower temperatures, especially during early mornings and late nights, can cause blood vessels to constrict and blood to thicken. Experts say that many people drink less water in cold weather, which can worsen these problems and lead to sudden spikes in blood pressure.
Dr Rohit Kumar, deputy director of the Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIC), said that drinking enough lukewarm water during winter helps maintain proper blood circulation. He recommended that people drink a glass of warm or lukewarm water before going to sleep at night, as it can reduce the risk of heart and brain-related complications. Maintaining fluid intake is especially important because restricted water consumption makes the blood thicker and puts extra pressure on the heart.
Doctors also emphasised the importance of diet and daily habits in winter. Dr Shama Rani, senior medical officer at IGIC, advised consuming high-protein and easily digestible foods to maintain energy and strengthen immunity. She recommended limiting salt intake to five grams per day to avoid sudden rises in blood pressure. Morning walks should only be taken when the sun is out, and if it is too cold, people should do indoor exercises and pranayama to stay active. Regular light activity, combined with a balanced diet, helps control blood pressure and reduces health risks.
Dr Gunjan Kumar, assistant professor in the Department of Neurology at PMCH, said that high blood pressure is the leading cause of brain hemorrhage, which is life-threatening. He recommended regular blood pressure monitoring, taking prescribed medicines on time, and eating a diet rich in green vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and low-fat foods while avoiding fried and processed items. Experts agree that simple lifestyle measures, including hydration, proper diet, and exercise, are the most effective ways to prevent heart and brain problems during the winter season.
