Patna: The Patna Municipal Corporation (PMC) will soon outsource the collection of property tax and garbage fees to a private agency, replacing municipal employees in the role. The move, expected to begin in February, aims to streamline revenue collection and expand the tax base.
Starting next month, the corporation will begin appointing private agencies to handle collections. In the new financial year, 23,000 additional residents will be brought under the property tax net, raising the total number of taxpayers from the current 132,000. A fresh survey of properties across the city is underway to support this expansion. Reflecting these changes, the municipal revenue collection target has been increased from Rs 120 crore to more than Rs 150 crore.
One-Time Settlement Scheme Offers Waiver of Interest and Penalties
In a parallel initiative, the Urban Development Department has fully implemented a One-Time Settlement Scheme, offering significant concessions to taxpayers. Residents who pay their outstanding property taxes for 2025–26 and earlier will have all interest and penalties waived, provided the principal amount is paid by March 31, 2026. Payments can be made online via the corporation’s portal or through a dedicated WhatsApp chatbot.
The concession extends to all property types—including residential, commercial, industrial, and institutional properties—and applies even to cases pending in courts or tribunals. Taxpayers involved in litigation can avail of the scheme by submitting proof of case withdrawal, while properties without assigned holding numbers are also eligible.
Several measures are being taken to increase property tax compliance, including ongoing property assessments and the outsourcing of tax collection to a private agency.
“Outsourcing will ensure efficient revenue collection while expanding the number of taxpayers,” said Yashpal Meena, Municipal Commissioner of PMC.
