Patna: A shocking robbery took place near the Gandhi Museum in Patna, close to the District Magistrate’s residence, late on the night of January 1. An engineering student was attacked and robbed of more than Rs 10,000 by a group of unidentified criminals. The incident happened under the limits of the Gandhi Maidan police station, an area considered one of the most sensitive and secure parts of the city.
The victim, Nivedan Kumar, is a resident of Samastipur and studies engineering in the Musallahpur area of Patna. He had gone out with two friends who had come to visit the city for New Year celebrations. The three friends were riding on a single motorcycle and moving around the city late at night when they reached the area near the Gandhi Museum.
According to Nivedan, 15 to 20 miscreants suddenly arrived in a Scorpio and another vehicle. They stopped the motorcycle and started beating the students without any warning. The attackers used hockey sticks, iron rods and pistols. Nivedan was beaten for nearly 10 minutes and suffered a serious head injury, which caused heavy bleeding. Seeing the violent attack, his two friends ran away to save themselves and received minor injuries while escaping.
Nivedan said he had around Rs 10,000 to Rs 12,000 in his pocket for the trip, which the attackers snatched before fleeing. After the miscreants left, his friends returned and informed the police. With the help of the police, Nivedan was taken to Patna Medical College Hospital (PMCH) for treatment. He later submitted a written complaint along with his medical report at the Gandhi Maidan police station.
Police officials said they have started an investigation into the case. CCTV footage from nearby areas is being checked to identify the attackers. However, till now, no arrests have been made.
