Patna: The Bihar government has approved a major upgrade to the state’s prison system, announcing plans to install 9,073 new CCTV cameras across 53 jails to enhance security and monitoring.
The decision, ratified by the state cabinet, aims to integrate modern surveillance across all facilities. In eight prisons where cameras are already in place, the existing systems will be connected to a new, advanced network to enable coordinated monitoring throughout the state.
According to officials, cameras will be installed at key locations within prison premises, including entrances, corridors, barracks, visitor areas, and security checkpoints. The project will also introduce sophisticated software for recording, storing, and retrieving footage efficiently.
The plan includes strengthening field-level infrastructure, establishing a fibre-optic network, and developing dedicated surveillance rooms in each facility. Trained personnel will be deployed to manage the systems, with funds allocated for expert consultancy and contingency requirements.
The project, to be executed by the Bihar State Electronics Development Corporation Limited (BELTRON), is estimated to cost Rs 155.38 crore, including corporate margins.
Authorities say the overhaul will improve discipline, transparency, and security within the jails, allowing prompt responses to incidents and increasing overall efficiency in prison administration.
