Patna: The carefully stage-managed reception for Nitin Nabin at Patna airport on Thursday was less a routine homecoming and more a signal of shifting power dynamics within the Bharatiya Janata Party. The presence of senior leaders in a show of unity underlined a message widely understood in political circles: instructions from the party’s high command are now being followed to the letter.
Nabin, a young leader from Bihar and the BJP’s acting national president, arrived in the state capital for a two-day visit. He was received by Union minister of state for home affairs Nityanand Rai, deputy chief minister Samrat Choudhary, ministers from the BJP quota in the Nitish Kumar government, senior office-bearers and a large number of party workers.
Such a display was notable precisely because it had been missing during Nabin’s earlier visit after his elevation, when several senior leaders failed to turn up at the airport. That absence reportedly drew the displeasure of the party leadership, which subsequently issued clear instructions that Nabin, as part of the BJP’s top tier, must be formally received by senior figures during his visits.
Thursday’s show of unity is being widely interpreted as the direct outcome of that directive.
Speaking at the airport, Rai said the BJP was increasingly entrusting younger leaders with major responsibilities, generating enthusiasm among its grassroots workers. He added that organisational discipline and respect for leadership remained the party’s greatest strengths—remarks seen by observers as a pointed organisational message.
Nabin’s visit carries symbolic as well as political weight. On Friday, coinciding with Makar Sankranti, he is scheduled to host a traditional dahi-chura feast in Patna. While he has organised the event annually, this is the first such celebration since he assumed the role of acting national president, lending the occasion added significance.
Political speculation around Nabin’s rise had already intensified after his sudden arrival in Patna just days before his elevation. His reception this week, and the public unity on display, are now being read as evidence of his growing clout within the party and the confidence placed in him by the leadership.
