Patna: A notorious criminal was shot and injured during a late-night encounter with police in Bihar’s capital, Patna, authorities said on Friday.
The suspect, identified as Nitish, was shot in the leg during a gunfight with police in the Ratan Tola area under Maner police station late on Thursday. He was arrested at the scene and admitted to Patna Medical College and Hospital for treatment.
Police said they had received specific intelligence that Nitish, who is wanted in connection with several criminal cases, was hiding in the area. Officers cordoned off Ratan Tola and launched a raid. According to officials, the suspect opened fire after spotting the police, prompting them to retaliate.
Investigators allege that Nitish was involved in the shooting and robbery of a gold merchant on January 9. The victim was attacked on a public road and sustained gunshot injuries, with the incident captured on CCTV footage. Police said the suspect had been frequently changing locations to evade arrest since the attack.
Thursday night’s incident is the third police encounter reported in Bihar this month. Earlier in January, police were involved in separate encounters with Prahlad Kumar in Barh and with criminal Manager Rai in an operation conducted by the Special Task Force and Khagaul police.
