Patna: Nitin Nabin, a five-time legislator from Patna’s Bankipur constituency, is poised to make history as the first BJP national president from Bihar. The 40-year-old is expected to file his nomination for the post on Monday, with party sources indicating he may be the sole candidate.
If elected, Nabin will also become the youngest national president in the BJP’s history, succeeding JP Nadda and becoming the party’s 11th leader since its founding.
The nomination process will take place at the BJP headquarters in Delhi. Reports suggest Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the incumbent president, JP Nadda, may attend the event. Electoral formalities are expected to conclude within three hours, with the official announcement scheduled for January 20.
According to the BJP’s schedule, nomination papers will be accepted from 2pm to 4pm, followed by scrutiny from 4pm to 5pm, and the window for withdrawals from 5pm to 6pm. If only one valid nomination remains, the candidate will be declared elected unopposed.
The BJP national president is elected by the party’s National Council, which comprises roughly 5,708 members from across more than 30 states. In the event of a single nomination, voting is not required.
Previous BJP presidents include Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Murli Manohar Joshi, Kushabhau Thackeray, Bangaru Laxman, Rajnath Singh, Nitin Gadkari, Amit Shah and JP Nadda, with Laxman and Advani serving multiple terms.
