Patna: Police in Bihar are expected to make a disclosure Today in the high-profile case of a NEET student who was allegedly raped and died while staying in a Patna hostel. The state’s Director General of Police (DGP) has called a press conference at 1:30 pm.
Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary said the government had given the police “a free hand” to investigate. “The Special Investigation Team is doing its job. Whoever is guilty will be brought before everyone,” he said.
The case has also triggered significant political activity. The Congress party staged a major protest in Patna, with Bihar Congress President Rajesh Ram and in-charge Krishna Allavaru present. Women activists arrived carrying bangles for the home minister, while party members burned an effigy of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.
Lalu Prasad’s daughter, Rohini Acharya, has publicly questioned the state government’s handling of the case. Writing on social media, she asked when the accused would be arrested. “Neither the hostel owners, the Agarwal couple, nor their accused son have been arrested yet,” she wrote.
ना ही साक्ष्यों के साथ आपराधिक छेड़ -… pic.twitter.com/uk8CRp7Suz

Three close associates of the deceased were reportedly detained late Sunday night and are being interrogated by the SIT, although this has not been officially confirmed. Investigators are examining the activities of staff at Prabhat Memorial Hospital and exploring whether a conspiracy was hatched during the student’s treatment.
The victim, from Jehanabad, had returned to her Patna hostel just one day before the incident while preparing for her NEET exams.
The case has also reached the National and State Human Rights Commissions. Human rights advocate S.K. Jha filed separate petitions highlighting the rape and severe injuries noted in the student’s post-mortem report, calling for a high-level investigation under the supervision of a retired judge. Letters have also been sent to the Chief Justices of the Supreme Court and the Patna High Court.
On Saturday night, Purnea MP Pappu Yadav led a protest outside the hospital, demanding justice for the victim. He alleged that the student was forcibly put on a ventilator despite regaining consciousness during treatment and questioned why the police had not taken Manish Ranjan, one of the accused, into custody.
Protests demanding justice have also been reported across Bihar, including in Begusarai and Jehanabad, organised by the NSUI and other political groups. Former state Congress president Akhilesh Singh and Jan Suraaj founder Prashant Kishor met with Patna police officials, calling for swift action to ensure justice for the family.
