Patna: Security has been intensified across Bihar’s frontier districts bordering Nepal after intelligence inputs prompted a high alert ahead of Republic Day, officials said on Saturday. Central and state agencies have been placed on heightened vigilance, with special focus on districts that see frequent cross-border movement.
The alert covers West Champaran, East Champaran, Sitamarhi, Madhubani, Araria, Kishanganj and Supaul, where joint patrols and surveillance have been stepped up. A coordination meeting between central agencies and district administrations resulted in orders for intensified patrolling across border areas for at least 72 hours.
Officials said extra police forces have also been deployed at railway stations, bus stands, crowded markets and other sensitive locations across the state as part of the Republic Day security drill.
According to sources, the alert follows inputs warning of possible attempts at infiltration and the movement of explosives, with particular concern over the use of drones to bypass traditional checks. In response, night patrols, vehicle checks and foot patrols have been increased along vulnerable stretches of the border.
The Sashastra Seema Bal, which guards India’s borders with Nepal, is carrying out coordinated patrols with local police forces from West Champaran in the west to Araria in the east. Surveillance on both the Nepal-facing side and the Bihar hinterland has been tightened to monitor suspicious movement.
Officials said the measures were precautionary and aimed at ensuring public safety during the national celebrations. “Given the open nature of the India–Nepal border and the festive period, we are maintaining maximum vigilance,” a senior official said, adding that the situation was being reviewed continuously.
