Patna: The Bihar Transport Department is preparing to bring a big change to the way traffic works across the state. Under the new plan, pedestrians will be given the first priority on the roads, even when there is heavy vehicle movement. This step has been taken to improve safety and make daily travel easier for people who walk to work, school, markets and public places. Officials believe that giving importance to pedestrians will reduce accidents and create a more disciplined traffic system in both cities and rural areas.
To start this process, the Transport Department has asked all districts in Bihar to submit detailed reports. These reports will highlight the areas where pedestrians face the most problems and where new facilities are needed. Based on this information, a state-level action plan is being prepared. The government wants to ensure that people can cross roads safely and walk comfortably without fear of speeding vehicles or unsafe roads.
As part of this plan, new infrastructure will be developed on busy roads. Zebra crossings, footpaths, underpasses and foot overbridges will be built where required. Old and damaged sidewalks will also be repaired. The work will be done with the help of the Road Construction Department, Urban Development and Housing Department and the Rural Works Department. District Transport Officers (DTOs) have been instructed to identify roads in their areas that need these facilities and to check the condition of existing ones.
The department has also asked districts to report where traffic signals are needed and to mark accident-prone locations on national and state highways. Special steps will be taken to improve safety in these danger zones. In cities, the use of zebra crossings will be strictly enforced so that drivers stop and allow pedestrians to pass.
To support this effort, the Transport Department has launched an awareness campaign across Bihar. Hoardings, jingles and short videos are being used to spread the message that pedestrians have the first right on the road. A special video titled “The Question of Safety” appeals to drivers to slow down and respect people crossing the road. Through these combined efforts, the government hopes to create safer streets and a more people-friendly traffic system in Bihar.
