Patna: The Bar Council of India and the Bihar State Bar Council on Thursday organised a felicitation ceremony in Patna to honour the new chief justice of the Patna High Court, Sangam Kumar Sahu, along with three newly appointed judges.
The event, held at the Maurya Hotel, saw Chief Justice Sahu felicitated alongside Justices Ritesh Kumar, Praveen Kumar and Anshul Raj. Members of the legal fraternity, senior advocates and bar council representatives attended the ceremony.
In his address, Chief Justice Sahu thanked the bar councils for the honour and underlined the interdependence of lawyers and judges. “The bar and the bench are like the two wheels of a chariot,” he said, adding that the judicial system could function effectively only when both worked in harmony.
He also raised concerns about the pendency of bail-related cases in lower courts, noting that many such matters were not being disposed of at the district level. Sahu said he had discussed the issue with district judges and fellow judges, stressing that timely disposal at the trial court level was essential to reduce the burden on the high court.
Concluding his speech with a line from a Hindi song, he remarked that his aim was to contribute meaningfully during his tenure so that “when I leave, people will say, don’t go yet, my heart is not yet full”.
The president of the Bar Council of India, Manan Kumar Mishra, welcomed the judges and presented a bouquet, memento and traditional shawl to the chief justice. Recalling the long history of the Patna High Court, he described it as an institution with a distinguished legacy shaped by eminent judges and lawyers.
Bihar State Bar Council president Ramakant Sharma said the ceremony had been organised to honour the new chief justice and judges, emphasising that cooperation between the bar and the bench was vital for delivering justice in the public interest.
Members of the Bihar State Bar Council presented mementos and shawls to all the judges present. The event was attended by advocate general P K Shahi, senior advocates Yogesh Chandra Verma, Krishna Prasad Singh and S D Yadav, along with a large number of practising lawyers.
Speakers at the ceremony reiterated their shared commitment to upholding the rule of law and ensuring timely justice for the people.
