Patna: A fresh controversy has erupted in Bihar after Pappu Yadav alleged widespread exploitation of girls in hostels in Patna, prompting sharp reactions from political leaders and authorities.
The Purnia MP made the remarks during a press conference, where he claimed that girls in certain hostels in the state capital were being exploited and “served up” to officials. He further alleged that such incidents were not isolated but part of a broader, systemic pattern.
Yadav said he had come across multiple cases through video clips shown on his mobile phone, which he described as evidence from a purported sting operation. According to him, the material pointed to the involvement of politicians and officials, suggesting the existence of what he termed a “system of exploitation”.
In strongly worded remarks, the MP also claimed that “daughters are being auctioned off”, raising concerns about the safety of women and girls. He questioned the silence of institutions such as the Bihar State Commission for Women, asking why action had not been taken if such practices were occurring. Yadav said he was speaking out against injustice rather than targeting any individual.
The allegations have drawn criticism and intensified tensions with the women’s commission. The body had earlier issued a notice to Yadav over a separate statement, seeking an explanation. Officials now allege that he failed to respond appropriately and instead posted an objectionable reply on social media.
The chairperson of the commission said the remarks had caused offence and indicated that a defamation case would be pursued.
Taking suo motu cognisance of the latest claims, the commission has directed Yadav to appear before it on April 30 with supporting evidence. It said that unverified statements risk damaging institutional credibility and could send a harmful message to the public.
The episode has added to the already charged political climate in Bihar, with opposition and ruling parties trading accusations while calls grow for an impartial investigation into the claims.
