Patna: The controversy surrounding remarks by Purnea MP Pappu Yadav on “bedroom politics” has intensified, even after he issued an apology. The Bihar State Women’s Commission has sought an explanation, but the deadline for his response has expired without any formal reply.
On April 23, Yadav apologised for hurting sentiments but simultaneously made fresh allegations, claiming that a large percentage of political leaders consume obscene content and challenging authorities to check their mobile phones. He also displayed a photograph of the commission’s chairperson during his remarks, further fuelling the row.
The controversy began during discussions on the Women’s Reservation Bill in Parliament, when Yadav alleged that many lawmakers watch inappropriate content and questioned their commitment to women’s issues. The situation escalated on April 20 when, during a press conference, he claimed that women cannot progress in politics without the support of influential leaders. He repeated similar remarks in subsequent public statements and social media interactions.
In another statement, he alleged that the problem extends beyond politics to educational institutions, corporate sectors and even police services. His remarks triggered strong reactions, prompting the Bihar State Women’s Commission to take suo motu cognisance on April 21 and issue a notice seeking his response within three days.
The commission warned that failure to provide a satisfactory explanation could lead to a recommendation to the Lok Sabha Speaker, Om Birla, for cancellation of his membership. National Commission for Women chief Vijaya Rahatkar also termed the remarks objectionable and asked him to apologise.
However, Yadav dismissed the notice, stating that he had torn it up and would not respond. His health reportedly deteriorated after a social media broadcast on April 21, following which he was briefly hospitalised.
What action can be taken?
Experts note that the Women’s Commission has limited powers. It can direct the police to register an FIR, send an inquiry team, or recommend action to the Lok Sabha Speaker. However, the final decision on disqualification rests with the Speaker.
Legal experts say an FIR can be filed if any woman files a complaint. Provisions related to outraging modesty, sexual harassment, defamation, obscenity and criminal intimidation under Indian law may be invoked, depending on the nature of the complaint.
Can his membership be cancelled?
Disqualification of a Member of Parliament is primarily governed by conviction in a criminal case. If a court convicts Yadav in a defamation case and awards a sentence of two years or more, it could lead to disqualification. However, such decisions are subject to judicial review and can be challenged in higher courts, as seen in past cases involving leaders like Rahul Gandhi.

Political observers suggest that such remarks may be aimed at staying in the public spotlight, projecting an aggressive image, and shaping a narrative of defiance against institutions. Analysts also point to the possibility of using controversy to mobilise support and frame the issue as political targeting.
