Patna: Travel between Bihar and Jharkhand is set to become faster and safer as authorities move ahead with plans to widen National Highway 333A, a key route connecting Sheikhpura to the Jharkhand border through Banka. The 166-kilometre corridor will be reconstructed and expanded from its existing width of five metres to seven metres, addressing long-standing complaints of congestion and unsafe driving conditions.
Large sections of the highway are currently in poor condition, with repeated damage caused by heavy vehicles and limited carriageway space. Despite regular maintenance, the narrow road has struggled to handle increasing traffic, often leading to bottlenecks and delays. Officials have now opted for a complete rebuild rather than temporary repairs to ensure durability and smoother movement.
The upgraded highway is expected to significantly strengthen connectivity across Sheikhpura, Sikandra, Jamui, Jhajha and Banka districts. Administrators say the wider road will shorten travel time, reduce traffic pressure and support local businesses by improving the movement of goods and passengers. The project is also seen as crucial for enhancing trade and economic activity between Bihar and neighbouring Jharkhand.
Preparatory work is already under way to remove obstacles along the route. Power poles installed along both sides of the road will be relocated in coordination with the electricity department to prevent service disruptions during construction. A survey to count and shift the poles is expected to begin shortly, clearing the path for faster execution of the widening work.
The Road Construction Department will oversee the project, which officials describe as a key step in modernising the region’s transport infrastructure. Once completed, the revamped stretch from Barbigha through Banka and Panjwara to the Jharkhand border is expected to improve safety standards, reduce accidents and provide commuters with a more reliable and comfortable journey.
