Patna: The death of a teenage student in Bihar has triggered allegations of murder, political intervention and an escalating investigation, after her family disputed claims that she fell accidentally from a coaching centre building.
Pinky Kumari, an intermediate first-year student, died on Thursday after falling from the fourth floor of a coaching institute in Phulwarisharif, a suburb of Patna. The incident took place in Hari Nagar Colony near the AIIMS roundabout. While the coaching centre management described the death as an accident, her family has alleged that she was killed.
According to relatives, Pinky left home at about 8am to attend her morning coaching class, located roughly two kilometres away. Within an hour, the family received news that she had fallen from the building. When they reached the spot, her body was lying on the road. She was taken to hospital, where doctors declared her dead.
The family said they initially believed she had suffered a fatal fall. However, they later raised suspicions after noticing what they described as serious injuries while preparing for her funeral at Digha Ghat. Her father, Satyendra Rai, and brother, Priyanshu, alleged that there were wounds on her back and other parts of her body that appeared to have been inflicted by a sharp object.
Police were informed and the body was sent for postmortem examination. Officers said the cause of death would only be confirmed after the report.
CCTV footage from the coaching centre, now seized by investigators, shows Pinky climbing the stairs shortly after arriving. Two young men are seen walking quickly behind her. Minutes later, she is seen falling. The footage reportedly shows the two men descending, pausing briefly and then running away.
Sushil Kumar, the SDPO-2 of Phulwarisharif, said three people had been detained for questioning. Two of them are believed to be painters working in a flat in the building. Police said they were examining multiple angles, including whether the student had been forcibly taken to the fourth floor.
Rupesh Kumar, a teacher at the coaching institute, said the student had not yet entered the classroom. He claimed that two students informed staff that she had fallen. However, the CCTV footage places her inside the building before the teacher’s arrival, raising further questions.
Investigators said no bloodstains were found at the scene. How and why the student reached the fourth floor remains under scrutiny.

The case has also taken a political turn. Pappu Yadav, the MP from Purnia, criticised the police in a social media post, alleging that “another daughter has been murdered” and accusing authorities of laxity in serious cases.
The incident has sparked anger and anxiety in the locality, with residents demanding a thorough and transparent investigation. Pinky had been preparing for engineering entrance examinations, her family said.
As police await the postmortem findings, the central question remains unresolved: was her death a tragic accident, or the result of foul play?
