Patna: Student union elections at Patna University have been postponed with immediate effect, days before polling was due to take place on February 28. The university administration announced the decision in an official press release, stating that the elections will remain suspended until further notice.
The move follows a series of incidents on campus that authorities described as “unexpected and inappropriate”. According to the statement, a group of students allegedly entered Patna Women’s College without permission and raised slogans, an act the administration said breached the election code of conduct.
In a separate incident at Patna Science College, disruption was reported during an ongoing class. Some students were accused of misbehaving with a teacher and university officials. The administration said the events were taken seriously and prompted a review of the prevailing situation on campus.
Officials also pointed to multiple complaints of premature campaigning. Printed banners and posters had appeared across campuses before the permitted time, while expensive four-wheel vehicles were allegedly used for canvassing. These actions, the university said, undermined the fairness of the election process.
The postponement has stirred unease among student organisations and candidates who had already begun preparing for the polls. With campaigning halted and uncertainty looming, attention has now shifted to the administration’s next steps. University authorities have emphasised that maintaining discipline and preserving the academic environment remain their priority, adding that a fresh election date will be announced only after normalcy is restored.
