Patna: A senior nurse at Patna Medical College and Hospital was allegedly beaten to death by her husband following a dispute over visiting her in-laws for Holi.
Chandni Kumari, described by colleagues as a head nurse at the hospital, was killed late on Friday night at her home on East Gola Road in the Danapur police station area of Patna. The accused, Sonu Kumar Singh, originally from Chapra, allegedly called the emergency helpline 112 himself after the incident and informed police.
Officers arrived at the scene and took Singh into custody. Police said initial inquiries suggest a history of domestic disputes, financial stress and an argument related to Holi celebrations may have led to the killing.
According to investigators and family members, the couple had argued over whether Kumari would visit her in-laws during the festival. The disagreement escalated into violence. Police sources said Kumari was slapped forcefully, causing bleeding from her ear. There were also indications of strangulation and a blow to the chest. She died shortly afterwards.
Kumari’s sister, Beauty Kumari, alleged that Singh had lost approximately Rs 400,000 in an online game, money she said Chandni had given him. She also claimed that Kumari had recently purchased a piece of land and had shown it to her husband on Friday afternoon, and that her in-laws frequently pressured her for money.
Krishna Singh, the deceased’s brother-in-law, said he received a call from the accused around 2am informing him of the killing. By the time family members reached the house, police were already present.
Kumari’s body was found inside a room, reportedly covered in blood. Following a postmortem examination on Saturday morning, the body was handed over to her family.
The station house officer of Danapur police station, Prashant Kumar Bhardwaj, said further action would be taken based on a written complaint submitted by the family. The investigation is ongoing.
