Siwan: A jewellery shop was looted in broad daylight in Bihar’s Siwan district on Monday after a group of armed men stormed a market in the Basantpur police station area, police said. The incident took place at Khori Pakar market and caused panic among shopkeepers and residents in the busy commercial area. Police teams later reached the spot and began an investigation.
According to initial reports, five to six men arrived at the market on two or three motorcycles and entered Arun Jewellers. The attackers allegedly pulled out firearms and threatened the shop owner before taking control of the premises. The shop owner was reportedly held at gunpoint while the suspects began collecting valuables from the store.
The group is believed to have fled with gold and silver ornaments along with cash. Local residents estimated the value of the stolen items to be between Rs 18 lakh and Rs 20 lakh, while some traders suggested the amount could be as high as Rs 25 lakh. After carrying out the robbery, the suspects reportedly escaped from the market on motorcycles.
Witnesses said the attackers fired several rounds during the incident to create panic and prevent people from intervening. The gunshots triggered chaos in the market, forcing many shopkeepers to close their stores and run for safety. Within minutes, a crowd gathered near the shop as news of the robbery spread through the area.
The incident was captured on CCTV cameras installed inside the shop, which police are now examining as part of the investigation. Officers are also scanning footage from nearby shops and roads to identify the suspects and track their escape route.
Siwan superintendent of police Vikram Sihag said the case was being investigated from multiple angles and police teams had launched raids to arrest those involved. Meanwhile, local traders expressed concern over security in the area, noting that this was the second major robbery targeting jewellery shops in the district in recent weeks. They have urged authorities to strengthen security arrangements in the market.
