Darbhanga: In a major boost for rail infrastructure in Bihar, two railway stations in Darbhanga district Shisho and Kakarghatti have been granted A-grade junction status. The move is being seen as a significant step towards improving connectivity and easing the operational pressure on the busy Darbhanga Junction.
Officials say the upgrade will help enhance passenger amenities and modernise railway infrastructure at both stations. The development is also expected to strengthen freight movement in the region, creating better logistical support for trade and transportation in north Bihar.
Member of Parliament and Railway Standing Committee member Gopal Ji Thakur welcomed the decision and expressed gratitude to the Railway Board. He said six stations under the East Central Railway’s Samastipur Division have been approved for junction status, including the two stations in Darbhanga district.
According to the MP, Kakarghatti railway station has strategic importance because trains arriving from the Jayanagar and Jhanjharpur routes split towards Darbhanga and Sitamarhi from this point. This route-dividing function was a key factor in granting the station junction status.
Similarly, Shisho railway station functions as a bypass junction where routes from Jayanagar, Jhanjharpur and the Darbhanga–Samastipur line diverge. Railway officials said this operational significance met the criteria for upgrading the station to an A-grade junction.
Currently, Darbhanga Junction railway station handles heavy rail traffic. Around 15 trains originate from the station daily, while an average of 51 passenger trains and 14 freight trains pass through it every day, placing considerable pressure on its infrastructure.
To address this, the railways have proposed building a mega coaching complex at Shisho station, located about four kilometres from Darbhanga Junction. With the station now receiving junction status, officials expect the project to gain momentum and improve train operations and scheduling in the region.
Thakur added that he had repeatedly raised the issue of expediting railway projects in Darbhanga during meetings of the Railway Standing Committee. The latest decision, he said, is expected to give a fresh push to railway development and strengthen transport infrastructure in the district.
