Saran: A minor girl was found dead near a well in Bihar’s Saran district on March 11, prompting a police investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death. Initial reports from the postmortem examination indicate no signs of sexual assault, though forensic tests are ongoing to clarify the case. The investigation began after the victim’s mother filed a complaint alleging gang rape.
Police said the girl had been communicating with a youth from her village via Instagram and had planned to meet him near an abandoned house in the area. According to authorities, the two were already acquainted and had spoken on the afternoon of the day she died.
The body was recovered from a well situated approximately five metres from the derelict structure. Residents had already retrieved the body and moved it to the side before police arrived at the scene around 4:45 pm. Following the mother’s complaint, an FIR was registered under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act against five named suspects.
Investigators inspected the site, collecting evidence with the assistance of a forensic team. Witnesses reported that the victim’s mother had called asking about her daughter’s whereabouts. When he checked, the witness found the girl near the house, where a youth and his sister were also present. Panic ensued as more villagers arrived, and the youth managed to flee. How the girl fell into the well remains unclear.
One youth has been arrested and admitted to being present at the scene, confirming his contact with the girl via Instagram. The preliminary postmortem report indicated that the cause of death was asphyxia due to drowning, with no external injuries noted. Police continue to await forensic results to determine the full circumstances of the case.
