Patna: Patna’s riverfront along the Ganges is set for a major transformation, with the Bihar government planning to develop a 7km stretch from Digha to Sabhyata Dwar into an integrated recreational and tourism hub.
The project, estimated to cost Rs 330 crore, aims to convert the existing Marine Drive corridor into a multi-purpose public space combining greenery, leisure facilities and modern infrastructure.
From roadway to public space
Officials said the stretch, which currently serves as a key arterial road, will be redesigned to offer a world-class recreational experience alongside its transport function.
The proposed integrated park will include features such as a butterfly park, a botanical garden and open gym facilities, along with landscaped green zones.
Green cover and infrastructure
More than 100,000 saplings are to be planted across the project area, covering around 50 hectares, with a dedicated 8-hectare section earmarked for the botanical park.
A 7km walking track and a separate cycling lane are also being developed to encourage fitness and public use of the riverfront.
Focus on tourism and livelihoods
A key component of the project is the proposed ‘Mahila Haat’, a marketplace aimed at supporting women entrepreneurs by providing space to sell handicrafts, artwork and other products.
Authorities said the initiative is intended to promote local art while also contributing to women’s economic empowerment.
Parking and amenities
To support increased footfall, a large parking facility is being developed with capacity for around 4,000 cars and 13,000 two-wheelers.
Land-filling work is currently under way, and officials expect the project to be completed within the next two years.
The redevelopment, being undertaken by the Bihar State Road Development Corporation, is expected to give a new identity to Patna’s riverfront and position it as a major urban tourism destination.
