Patna: A spell of storms, rainfall and strong winds is expected across Bihar from March 27 to March 29, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) warning of lightning and possible hailstorms in several districts.
The shift in weather has been attributed to an active western disturbance, which is likely to bring gusty winds of 40–50 kmph along with thunderstorms and light to moderate rain across the state.
An orange alert has been issued for 12 districts in north-western and north-central Bihar, including West Champaran, East Champaran, Sitamarhi, Sheohar, Gopalganj, Siwan, Saran, Vaishali, Samastipur, Darbhanga, Madhubani and Muzaffarpur.
These areas are likely to experience severe weather conditions, including hailstorms and lightning, officials said.
A yellow alert has also been issued for southern districts such as Patna, Gaya, Begusarai and Bhagalpur, where sudden changes in weather and scattered rainfall are expected.
The forecast follows a period of intense heat across the state, with temperatures crossing 35C in several districts. Bikramganj in Rohtas recorded a high of 37.9C, making it one of the hottest locations in recent days.
Meteorologists said cloud cover and rainfall over the next three days are likely to bring a drop of 3–4C in maximum temperatures, offering some relief from the heat.
However, authorities have cautioned that hailstorms and lightning could pose risks, particularly in north Bihar, where crops may be affected.
Residents have been advised to remain alert and take precautions during adverse weather conditions.
