Patna, March 28 , 2026: A patient’s journey during treatment is not limited merely to medicines and surgery; it also involves mental stress, financial struggles and the hopes of their families. Understanding this pain and turning the “Patient First” philosophy into reality, AIIMS Patna on march 27, 2026 launched the ‘Medical Social Welfare Unit’.
This special unit will operate as a ‘One-Stop Center’. Now, patients and their families will no longer have to wander from pillar to post; they will receive the right guidance, reliable counseling and the direct benefits of welfare schemes all under one roof. The unit will be staffed by Medical Social Service Officers and other personnel from the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PMJAY).
The unit will provide psychological and social support to patients and their families, helping them cope with stress, grief and difficult times. Financial assistance is another crucial component of this unit. Through this, patients will be able to easily access the benefits of the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PMJAY), Chief Minister Relief Fund (CMRF), Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram (RBSK) and other central and state government aid schemes.
Acting as a bridge between patients, doctors and the hospital administration, this unit will collaborate with government and non-governmental organizations to ensure that the benefits of these schemes reach the patients smoothly. Additionally, the unit will run training and awareness campaigns for hospital staff, students and the general public.
The inauguration ceremony was graced by Executive Director Prof. (Brig.) Dr. Raju Agarwal, Medical Superintendent Prof. Dr. Anup Kumar, DMS (Patient Grievance) Dr. Sanjib Kumar Ghosh and AB-PMJAY Nodal Officer Dr. Sujeet Kumar Sinha. During the ceremony, Dr. Sujeet Kumar Sinha stated that the backend work of the PMJAY scheme will be handled through this unit to ensure smoother processing and better service delivery. He added that PMJAY, Chief Minister Relief Fund and RBSK schemes are already functional and further government schemes such as RAN, PMNRF, HMDG and others will be implemented at full scale and streamlined through this platform. He also informed that a dedicated portal will be developed to facilitate voluntary and philanthropic contributions for economically weaker patients, thereby ensuring timely financial support for their treatment.
Dr. Anup Kumar described the initiative as a welcome step, emphasizing that it will greatly benefit needy patients by acting as a true one-stop center. He added that the unit provides patients with a clear and reliable point of contact giving them a definite place to seek help and guidance. Prof. (Brig.) Dr. Raju Agarwal emphasized that this unit will establish a direct and reliable relationship between patients and doctors, ensuring that the benefits of government schemes reach the most in-need person standing at the end of the line.
With nearly half of the patients coming to AIIMS Patna covered under the Ayushman Bharat scheme, the hospital has already earned recognition for its stellar implementation of the program. Now, with the addition of the ‘Medical Social Welfare Unit’, the services at AIIMS Patna will become even more accessible, safe and compassionate establishing it as a national model for ideal and humane healthcare.
