Nalanda: An Army junior commissioned officer from Bihar’s Nalanda district has died after a prolonged illness, with his passing prompting an outpouring of grief in his native village.
The body of Suman Kumar Singh, also known as Pankaj, 45, reached his village Mokarampur Mirchayganj on Friday night, where residents gathered to pay their respects. The atmosphere turned sombre as villagers raised slogans in his honour and mourned his death.
Family members were seen grieving as his wife clung to the body and children stood nearby, a scene that moved many in attendance.
Singh had been posted in Ladakh, where he was reportedly caught in an avalanche while on duty, leading to a decline in his health. He was initially treated at an Army hospital before being shifted to a hospital in Lucknow, where he had been undergoing treatment for the past month.
According to family members, he was battling serious health conditions, including blood cancer and jaundice. Despite medical efforts, he died on March 27.
Relatives described Singh as the main support for his family. He is survived by his wife and two daughters. His younger brother is currently serving in the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF).
Bihar’s rural development and transport minister Shravan Kumar attended the funeral and paid tribute. He said the soldier’s service would not go in vain and assured the family of support in accordance with government provisions.
Residents and officials said Singh’s dedication and service would be remembered, as the village bid farewell to one of its own.
