Darbhanga: The central government has approved an expansion of the Darbhanga AIIMS project in Bihar, including an additional 700 beds and increased funding, in a move expected to accelerate construction and strengthen healthcare infrastructure in the region.
According to officials, the Union Cabinet has cleared an additional Rs 700 crore for the project, taking the total estimated cost to around Rs 2,006.07 crore. The decision was taken at a cabinet meeting held on March 25 under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Bihar BJP president Sanjay Saraogi welcomed the decision, describing it as a major boost for public welfare and a significant step towards improving healthcare facilities in the state. He also thanked Union health minister JP Nadda for his role in advancing the project.
Speaking in the Lok Sabha, Nadda said the government is committed to completing the Darbhanga AIIMS on priority, adding that the project would serve not only Bihar but also neighbouring states by providing advanced medical care, research and training facilities.
Health minister Mangal Pandey also welcomed the revised cost approval, stating that it would give fresh momentum to construction work. He said the project would strengthen healthcare services in Bihar and generate employment opportunities in the region.
Officials said the Darbhanga AIIMS is expected to become a major centre for modern medicine, significantly improving access to quality healthcare in the Mithila region. The project has faced delays in the past, but authorities indicated that the latest approvals would help remove existing bottlenecks.
Separately, Saraogi said the Centre had also reduced excise duty on petrol and diesel, calling it a relief measure for the public amid global uncertainties.
The government said the expansion of the Darbhanga AIIMS reflects its broader efforts to strengthen health infrastructure in Bihar and improve access to affordable medical services.
