Patna: A 25-year-old man from Bihar has died in Dubai under unclear circumstances, leaving his family in deep distress and raising concerns over the safety and welfare of migrant workers abroad.
Abhay Kumar, son of Arvind Paswan and a resident of Bhagwanpur village in Kheri panchayat, had travelled to Dubai in August 2023 in search of work to support his family. He was the sole earning member.
According to his family, news of his death reached them on March 30. The cause of death has not yet been confirmed.
Abhay Kumar was employed with a company identified by relatives as Shobha Aluminum, located in Dubai Investment Park-2. His father said he had been expecting his son to return home this year after completing his contract.
The family had also begun making arrangements for his marriage. Talks had nearly been finalised with a prospective match from the Kumbh area spanning Rohtas and Sasaram districts, and the wedding was to be held upon his return.
“He was supposed to come back this year. We were preparing for his marriage,” a family member said.
Abhay Kumar is survived by his parents, his mother Radhika Devi, an 11-year-old brother, and an eight-year-old sister.
Local representatives confirmed the news of his death. Radheshyam Choubey, a PACS member and BJP mandal president, said another worker from a nearby village in the Dhansoin police station area had relayed the information from Dubai.
Villagers said that on March 30, a call had been received from Dubai by the husband of the panchayat head, though it went unanswered. The information was later communicated through local officials before reaching the family.
Abhay Kumar’s father works as a labourer in Teera Bazaar. Neighbours described the family as devastated by the loss.
The family has been informed that the repatriation of the body may be delayed due to an air traffic shutdown. Authorities have indicated that the remains will be sent to India once normal services resume.
