Patna: The process of formation a new government in Bihar is expected to begin within the next ten days, with Nitish Kumar likely to resign from the post of chief minister on April 12.
According to political sources, a new chief minister is expected to be sworn in on April 14, along with members of a fresh cabinet.
Nitish Kumar is scheduled to leave for New Delhi on April 9 and is expected to take oath as a member of the Rajya Sabha on April 10. He is likely to return briefly before travelling again on April 11 and submitting his resignation the following day.
Sources within the National Democratic Alliance said the name of the next chief minister will be finalised at a meeting of the NDA legislature party on April 13. Senior leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party are also expected to attend the meeting.
Following the meeting, the newly elected leader of the NDA legislature party is expected to stake claim to form the government before the governor.
Separately,Nitish Kumar is set to begin another term as national president of the Janata Dal (United) later this month. Party leaders from across the country are expected to gather in Patna for the national executive and council meetings, where Nitish Kumar is scheduled to address members.
This will mark his first address to the party’s national executive without holding the office of chief minister.
Nitish Kumar was elected to the Rajya Sabha on March 16 and, in line with constitutional provisions, was required to resign from his state legislature position within 14 days. He stepped down from the legislative council on March 30, with his resignation accepted the same day.
