Darbhanga: Plans to transform Darbhanga into a regional trade and travel hub have moved forward, with authorities approving land acquisition for a combined cargo-logistics hub and aerocity project expected to be developed in three phases.
The project, backed by the Government of Bihar, will see around 50.04 acres of land acquired at an estimated cost of Rs 138.82 crore. Officials say the development could significantly reshape economic activity across the Mithilanchal region.
Located near Darbhanga Airport and at the endpoint of the Amas–Darbhanga six-lane highway, the site has been identified as strategically important, linking national highways, air connectivity and local road networks.
According to project details, the development will be divided into three core components: a modern cargo terminal, a logistics park and an aerocity. The cargo terminal is expected to facilitate exports of regional products such as fish, makhana (fox nuts), Mithila paintings and seasonal fruits, potentially opening access to international markets.
The logistics park will include cold storage and processing facilities aimed at reducing wastage of perishable goods, while improving supply chain efficiency for farmers and local producers.
The aerocity component will focus on passenger-facing infrastructure, with plans for hotels, shopping complexes and convention centres designed to support business travel and tourism.
Officials say the combined impact of the three phases could strengthen the local economy, create employment opportunities and reduce outward migration by providing jobs within the state.
Authorities have also said that landowners affected by the acquisition process will receive fair compensation, though further details on timelines and implementation are yet to be disclosed.
