Patna: Doctors at AIIMS Patna have entered the Limca Book of Records 2026 after carrying out a highly complex and delicate surgical procedure on a patient with a fish bone lodged in his cervical spine.
The 42-year-old patient was admitted to the institute on March 9, 2025, with a 35mm fish bone embedded deep within a critical region of the spine. The condition posed an immediate and severe risk, with even a minor error during surgery potentially proving fatal.
A neurosurgical team led by Dr Sarj Kumar Singh, with Dr Kranti Bhavana present, undertook the challenging operation. The procedure lasted approximately four hours and five minutes, during which surgeons carefully extracted the bone while avoiding damage to surrounding nerves and vital structures.
Hospital officials said the operation required exceptional precision and coordination, given the sensitivity of the cervical spine. The patient survived the procedure and is reported to have been given a renewed chance at life.
Prof (Brigadier) Dr Raju Agarwal described the achievement as evidence of the institute’s advanced medical capabilities and the dedication of its staff. He said the success would strengthen public confidence in high-quality healthcare services in Bihar.
In a separate development, doctors at PMCH in Patna also reported a significant surgical success. A 30-year-old woman underwent a complex procedure in which a tumour weighing approximately 15 kilograms was removed from her abdomen.
According to medical staff, the tumour had expanded up to the diaphragm, causing severe breathing difficulties, poor appetite, frequent vomiting and anaemia. Surgeons ensured that no complications arose during the operation.
Dr Rajiv Kumar Singh, superintendent of PMCH, congratulated the obstetrics and gynaecology team for successfully carrying out the life-saving procedure.
