Patna: A new double-line railway bridge being constructed parallel to the Rajendra Bridge over the Ganga in Mokama is nearing completion and is expected to be commissioned by mid-June, officials said.
The project, undertaken by East Central Railway, is aimed at reducing congestion on the existing bridge and improving rail operations across the Danapur and Sonpur divisions.
Speaking at a press conference at the Patliputra railway complex, general manager Chhatrasal Singh described the bridge as a critical infrastructure upgrade that will enhance both passenger and freight movement in the region.
At present, the Rajendra Bridge handles heavy train traffic, leading to operational constraints. The new bridge is expected to ease this pressure and ensure smoother movement of trains, particularly those connecting North Bihar.
As part of the project, Rail Over Rail (ROR) structures have been constructed at both ends — towards Jhajha and Patna — to seamlessly integrate the new line with the main Jhajha–Pt Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Junction rail section.
Officials said the development would enable uninterrupted movement of trains without affecting existing routes, improving efficiency across the network.
The railway authorities also announced plans for additional capacity expansion, including the construction of a third and fourth line between Pt Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Junction and Kiul, and a third line between Kiul and Jhajha.
The broader project has been divided into multiple segments — including DDU–Danapur, Danapur–Fatuha, Fatuha–Bakhtiyarpur, Bakhtiyarpur–Punarakh, Punarakh–Kiul and Kiul–Jhajha — with approvals being granted in phases by the Railway Board.
Officials said the new Ganga rail bridge is expected to be a “game changer” for the region, strengthening rail infrastructure and supporting future growth in traffic demand.
