Patna: Posters calling for Nishant Kumar to take over as Bihar’s chief minister have appeared outside the official residence of Nitish Kumar in Patna, amid intensifying speculation over a possible leadership transition in the state.
The posters, reportedly put up by workers of the Janata Dal (United), declare that “Bihar needs Nishant Kumar” and reject alternatives framed as “bulldozer chaos” or a return to “riots and unrest”. They describe Nishant Kumar as a “young public servant” and present him as the preferred successor.
The development comes at a time of heightened political activity in Patna, where discussions over the state’s next chief minister have gathered pace. The display of posters outside the chief minister’s residence has added a visual dimension to an otherwise behind-the-scenes contest over leadership within the ruling alliance.
Nitish Kumar, who recently entered the Rajya Sabha, vacated the official residence at 1 Aney Marg on April 11, a day after taking oath as a member of parliament. His belongings were moved to another government residence on Circular Road. Shortly afterwards, posters projecting Nishant Kumar as the “future CM of Bihar” appeared at the site.
Speculation has also been fuelled by the timing of Kharmas, a period in the Hindu calendar often considered inauspicious for major decisions, which ends on April 14. Political observers suggest that a new government formation could follow soon after, with April 15 being discussed as a possible date.
Several names are circulating as possible contenders for the chief minister’s post, including Nishant Kumar, Samrat Choudhary and Shreyasi Singh. While there has been no official confirmation from any party, the public messaging through posters signals an effort by sections of the JD(U) to shape the narrative.
Unconfirmed reports about a possible power-sharing arrangement suggest that the chief minister’s post could go to the Bharatiya Janata Party, with the JD(U) holding deputy chief minister positions. One of those roles is being linked to Nishant Kumar, though party leaders have not publicly endorsed such a move.
Further speculation indicates a cabinet split between the BJP and JD(U), with smaller allies such as Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas), Hindustani Awam Morcha and Rashtriya Lok Morcha expected to be accommodated with limited representation.
For now, the posters remain the most visible sign of a political transition that is yet to be formally announced, even as internal negotiations within the alliance continue behind closed doors.
