Patna: A significant political shift has taken place in Bihar with Nitish Kumar stepping down as chief minister, bringing an end to his latest term in office. Soon after his resignation, Samrat Choudhary was elected as the leader of the BJP legislative party, clearing the path for him to become the state’s next chief minister. The decision was taken during a key meeting of BJP leaders, where Vijay Sinha proposed Choudhary’s name, receiving support from several senior party members.
Nitish Kumar submitted his resignation to the governor at the Raj Bhavan on Tuesday, marking the end of a short tenure that began on 20 November 2025. His time in office lasted just 145 days, making it one of the briefest terms in his long political journey. This is the second time Kumar has had such a short stint as chief minister, with a similar situation occurring in 2000 when he resigned within a week of taking office. Despite the brevity of his latest tenure, Kumar remains one of the most influential political figures in Bihar’s recent history.
The day saw intense political activity from early morning, with several top politicians gathering at the chief minister’s residence. Leaders such as Sanjay Jha, Vijay Choudhary and Lalan Singh were among those present. Shortly after, Samrat Choudhary also joined the meeting. After a brief discussion, the leaders left together, indicating that a major decision had been finalised regarding the leadership of the state.
During his final cabinet meeting, Nitish Kumar appeared emotional as he addressed his colleagues. He reflected on his years in power since 2005 and said he had always tried to serve the people of Bihar to the best of his ability. He also expressed confidence that the new government would continue to work for the development of the state. Several ministers later described his tenure as historic, highlighting the lasting impact of his leadership as Bihar now prepares to move forward under Samrat Choudhary.
