Patna: The educational qualifications of Samrat Choudhary have once again come under public scrutiny in Bihar, as he has been elected as the next chief minister by the BJP legislators on Tuesday.
While political opponents have periodically questioned his academic credentials, his supporters argue that his administrative experience and political track record outweigh formal qualifications.
Academic background under discussion
According to his election affidavit, Choudhary pursued his studies at Madurai Kamaraj University and holds a Pre-Foundation Course (PFC) qualification.
The PFC is not considered a conventional undergraduate degree, which has led to recurring debates about the nature of his academic credentials.
He is also reported to hold an honorary Doctor of Letters (D.Lit.), a title conferred as recognition rather than earned through formal academic study—another aspect that has contributed to public confusion and political debate.

Experience versus education
Choudhary has consistently maintained that his political and administrative experience defines his credentials more than formal education.
Having held multiple portfolios, including roles as a minister and deputy chief minister, he has built his reputation on governance and organisational leadership.
Supporters say his career reflects practical expertise, while critics argue that educational transparency remains a relevant issue in public life.
Political journey and base
Choudhary began his political career in the 1990s and has since held key positions within the state’s political landscape. He has served as a legislator and handled departments such as agriculture, urban development and panchayati raj.
His political base lies in the Tarapur assembly constituency in Munger district, where he is considered to have a strong grassroots presence.
He later went on to serve as the state president of the Bharatiya Janata Party, further consolidating his position within the party.
Rising influence in Bihar politics
His appointment as deputy chief minister in 2024 marked a significant rise in his political stature, positioning him among the leading figures in Bihar politics. With his election as the next Bihar CM by the BJP, Choudhary has become the first leader of the saffron party to hold the top chair in Bihar.
