Patna: Patients suffering from thyroid cancer in Bihar and Jharkhand have received major relief as AIIMS Patna has started a new advanced treatment facility that brings diagnosis and treatment under one roof. The institute has introduced Theranostic Nuclear Medicine Services, which include PET-CT scans and radio-iodine therapy, marking an important step in cancer care for the region.
Earlier, many patients had to travel to big cities like Delhi, Mumbai or Kolkata for proper thyroid cancer treatment. This caused financial stress, long waiting periods and emotional difficulties for families. Now, with this new facility in Patna, patients can get complete care locally, which is expected to save both time and money while also reducing the burden on families.
The new service was inaugurated by Prof. (Brig.) Dr. Raju Agarwal, Executive Director and CEO of AIIMS Patna. He said the focus of this initiative is to make treatment easier and more accessible for patients. According to him, the aim is not just to introduce advanced technology but also to ensure that patients get timely and proper care without unnecessary delays.
Doctors explained that the system works by combining modern imaging tools like PET-CT and gamma camera scans with targeted radio-iodine therapy. This helps in accurately detecting thyroid cancer, checking whether it has spread in the body, and treating it effectively after surgery. In many cases, this therapy can help remove remaining cancer cells and improve recovery chances.
Medical experts at AIIMS Patna also highlighted that radio-iodine therapy can play a dual role in both diagnosis and treatment. If patients receive it at the right time after surgery, it can significantly increase the chances of complete recovery. The availability of these services in one place is expected to improve patient outcomes and reduce delays in treatment.
Officials further noted that AIIMS Patna is currently the only government hospital in Bihar and Jharkhand offering this complete thyroid cancer care facility at an affordable cost. They believe this will be a major support system for thousands of patients who previously had limited access to such advanced treatment options.
With this development, AIIMS Patna aims to strengthen cancer care in the region by focusing on early detection, accurate diagnosis and effective treatment, all within a single hospital setup.
