Patna: The government of Bihar has announced a wide-ranging plan to improve road safety, focusing on routes that have recorded the highest number of accidents in recent years. The transport department has decided to conduct a detailed technical study of these “dangerous” roads, with the aim of identifying the reasons behind frequent mishaps and finding long-term solutions. Officials say the move comes at a time when road accidents are becoming a serious concern, especially in busy urban areas like Patna.
As part of the initiative, experts will closely examine several accident-prone roads, including Atal Path, which has seen a rise in crashes due to increasing vehicle speeds. The study will look into factors such as road design, construction quality, traffic flow and safety measures already in place. Authorities believe that understanding these technical aspects will help them make better decisions to improve road conditions and reduce the number of accidents.
Officials have also said that special teams will be formed in every district to carry out this study and gather detailed reports. Once the findings are ready, a review meeting will be held to discuss the results and decide on the next steps. The plan includes involving different departments related to transport and infrastructure so that the problem can be addressed in a coordinated manner. Based on the study, steps like installing speed control systems and improving road design are expected to be taken.
Along with improving roads, the government is also focusing on pedestrian safety. Plans are being made to build 37 new foot overbridges across the state, including four on Atal Path. In places where such bridges already exist, people will be encouraged to use them more often. To make these structures more accessible, especially for elderly people and those with disabilities, all new foot overbridges will be equipped with elevators.
The state also plans to increase the number of CCTV cameras on major roads to monitor traffic and ensure rules are followed. At the same time, a large awareness campaign will be launched to educate people about road safety, including the importance of following traffic rules and using foot overbridges. Traffic police and officials will work together to ensure that these measures are properly implemented, in an effort to make Bihar’s roads safer for everyone.
