Bhagalpur: An executive officer was shot dead and a municipal chairman critically injured after armed assailants opened fire inside the Sultanpur Nagar Parishad Office, Bhagalpur on Tuesday, police said.
The deceased, identified as Krishna Bhushan, was serving as executive officer, while chairman Raj Kumar Guddu sustained a gunshot wound to the head and remains in critical condition.
Attack Inside Office
According to police, a group of three to five armed men entered the office around 3pm and opened fire.
Preliminary findings suggest the attackers had targeted the chairman, but fired at the executive officer when he intervened.
Both victims were shot in the head before the assailants fled the scene.
Victims Rushed To Hospital
The injured were taken to a local facility and later referred to Mayaganj Hospital in Bhagalpur.
Krishna Bhushan succumbed to his injuries on the way, while Guddu is undergoing treatment and is reported to be in a serious condition.
Probe Under Way
Senior police officials, including Pramod Kumar, reached the scene soon after the incident.
Police said two suspects have been identified through CCTV footage and raids are under way to apprehend them.
Investigators are also examining possible motives, including disputes related to tender processes and internal conflicts within the municipal body.
Eyewitness Accounts
Witnesses said the gunmen entered the office without warning and fired multiple rounds, triggering panic among staff and visitors present at the time.
Several employees and councillors rushed to assist the victims, but the attackers managed to escape.
