Patna: Bharatiya Janata Party has ended uncertainty over a vacant seat in the Bihar Legislative Council by nominating veteran party worker Surya Kumar Sharma, also known as Arvind Sharma, in a move that reportedly surprised some of its NDA allies.
The vacancy arose after former Bihar health minister Mangal Pandey was elected as an MLA, leaving his Legislative Council seat vacant. Several aspirants were said to be in contention, while coalition partners were also closely watching the nomination process.
Among those seeking the seat was Rashtriya Lok Morcha (RLM) leader Upendra Kushwaha, who was reportedly lobbying for his son Deepak Prakash. However, talks did not lead to an agreement, and the BJP chose to retain the seat within the party.
Veteran Organiser Rewarded
Sharma is considered one of the BJP’s long-serving grassroots leaders in Bihar. He currently serves as office in-charge within the party organisation and is regarded as an experienced hand in internal management.
The nomination is also being seen as politically significant, with the BJP selecting a leader from the Bhumihar community at a time when caste equations remain central to Bihar politics.
Congratulations from NDA Leaders
Chief minister Samrat Choudhary congratulated Sharma on being selected as the party’s candidate. He said the nomination recognised Sharma’s unwavering loyalty, dedication and years of hard work for the organisation.
Samrat added that he was confident Sharma would strengthen public service, good governance and the party organisation through his new role. Other BJP leaders also extended their congratulations.
Political Message
The decision suggests the BJP intends to prioritise organisational loyalty and internal cadre recognition, while also managing caste representation ahead of future electoral contests in Bihar.
