Patna: The Bihar government led by Samrat Choudhary is expected to undergo a major cabinet expansion on May 6, with negotiations between alliance partners intensifying following the conclusion of voting in the West Bengal Assembly Elections.
According to sources, the proposed expansion will see 13 ministers from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and 12 from the Janata Dal (United) (JD(U)) take the oath of office. Smaller allies are also expected to be accommodated, with two ministerial berths likely for the Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas), and one each for the Hindustani Awam Morcha and the Rashtriya Lok Morcha.
Party insiders indicate that the BJP is likely to finalise its list of ministerial candidates by May 1.
The swearing-in ceremony is expected to be a high-profile event, though its timing may still depend on the outcome of the Bengal polls. Sources suggest that an unfavourable result for the BJP could lead to a change in schedule.
Shift in alliance dynamics
The expansion marks a significant shift in Bihar’s coalition politics, with the BJP emerging as the dominant partner in the alliance for the first time. Traditionally, the JD(U) held the upper hand during its long tenure in government.
A “15–15 formula” is understood to be under discussion, with both the BJP and JD(U) expected to hold an equal number of cabinet positions. However, the balance of power appears to favour the BJP, which has secured key positions in the government.
Under the current arrangement, the post of deputy chief minister is expected to go to the JD(U), while the BJP retains greater control over core decision-making roles.
Key posts retained by BJP
Sources say the BJP has taken control of several important positions in the new government, including the chief minister’s office, the assembly speaker, and the home ministry.
The allocation of the home portfolio, in particular, is seen as politically significant, given its influence over law and order and administrative machinery. The decision is understood to have been finalised after discussions involving senior leaders, including Union home minister Amit Shah.
Portfolio reshuffle likely
The cabinet expansion is also expected to bring a broader reshuffle of departmental responsibilities. Several ministers may see changes in their portfolios, with indications that key and high-impact ministries could remain with the BJP.
JD(U) leaders have suggested that the earlier power-sharing arrangements are being revised, reflecting the evolving political equation within the alliance.
With the final list of ministers yet to be confirmed, attention now turns to the formal announcement expected in the coming days, as Bihar prepares for a significant political reorganisation.
