Patna: The state transport department has announced a statewide crackdown on vehicles displaying caste-indicative words, slogans or stickers, warning motorists to remove them within one month or face penalties during a special enforcement campaign.
In a directive issued by the department, officials said drivers found violating the order after the deadline could be fined up to Rs. 2,000 under Sections 177 and 179 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.
The department said traffic police teams would launch intensive checks once the grace period ends. Vehicle owners have been urged to voluntarily remove caste-related markings to avoid legal action.
Special enforcement drive planned
According to the transport department, the campaign aims to discourage the public display of caste identity on vehicles and strengthen compliance with traffic and public conduct regulations.
Officials said vehicles carrying caste-linked stickers or text would be identified during routine traffic inspections as well as through targeted drives.
The department appealed to motorists to comply with the order promptly and avoid unnecessary penalties.
Bihar plans expansion of AI-based traffic monitoring system
Separately, the department has also initiated preparations for expanding its Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS), which will use AI-enabled cameras and surveillance technology across nearly 700 locations in the state.
District transport officers (DTOs) have been instructed to identify new sites for installation of the systems in addition to locations already selected earlier.
The state transport commissioner has directed officials to prioritise areas with high traffic density, accident-prone stretches and locations requiring stricter enforcement.
Traffic police to assist in site selection
The transport department said traffic police expertise would be used extensively in selecting new surveillance points to improve road safety and monitoring efficiency.
The proposed AI-powered system will include facial recognition and advanced surveillance capabilities capable of identifying repeat traffic offenders and assisting law enforcement agencies in tracking criminal suspects.
Officials said the technology is planned for deployment along national highways, state highways, toll plazas and major urban centres across Bihar.
The department believes the integrated system will improve enforcement of traffic regulations while strengthening road safety infrastructure statewide.
