Patna: Tejashwi Yadav was granted bail by the MP-MLA Court on Thursday in connection with a case related to alleged violations of Covid-19 restrictions during the pandemic.
The Rashtriya Janata Dal leader appeared before the court earlier in the day following a summons issued in the matter. The case pertains to allegations that he gathered a crowd in Raghopur in Vaishali district at a time when strict Covid-related restrictions and social distancing norms were in force across the country.
According to the prosecution, an FIR had been lodged against Yadav during the peak of the pandemic for allegedly violating provisions of the Disaster Management Act and breaching public safety guidelines imposed by the administration.
After the hearing, the court granted him bail, providing relief in the long-pending case.
Speaking to reporters outside the court premises, Tejashwi Yadav claimed the case was politically motivated. He said the administration had filed the case during the Covid period to prevent him, as a public representative, from raising issues concerning ordinary citizens.
“We appeared before the court today in connection with a Covid-related case and have been granted bail,” he told the media, alleging that the case was “fabricated” to obstruct his political activities.
The matter relates to an incident in Raghopur, considered Yadav’s political stronghold, where he was accused of drawing crowds despite restrictions on public gatherings during the pandemic. Authorities had alleged that the event violated social distancing norms and other emergency regulations enforced at the time.
